“On the Road to Success, There are no Shortcuts ”

Some people are so keen to “taste success” or “get a job done” that they eagerly welcome any shortcut they can find.

Now don’t get me wrong, you may get a rare quick win, but when you look at those deemed successful in business over the past decade, people like Sir Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs… their success has not been built on shortcuts.

With this in mind, I thought I’d share a few golden nuggets I’ve picked up over the years on my own quest to achieve success:

1. “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” – I’m fortunate that I work in a great team where we constantly challenge each other and look to raise the bar – experts in our own fields and where knowledge and skills are consistently being shared. We put no limits on what success we can achieve. How are the 5 people you spend the most time with influencing your success levels?

2. Plan – don’t just drift in life and expect it to happen – set milestones, BHAGS (big hairy audacious goals), be ready for curve balls and detours and work through them. Make it happen.

3. Don’t hide from the truth – it will make you smarter, wiser and build your character.

4. “Success has many fathers” – don’t be the guy that takes the credit for someone else’s hard work and dedication – earn your own success!

5. Take risks – its better to try, regret and learn from it… than regret not trying at all. There are no epic failures… only epic learns, so dust yourself off and go again.

6. Energy, Energise, Edge and Execution – demonstrating the 4 characteristic traits that Jack Welch used to determine his most successful leaders.

These are just a few of the golden nuggets that have helped me along the way but a key part of being successful is continual learning, so feel free to comment and share any of your own personal golden nuggets…
