How to recover when tech implementation isn’t going as planned

Jodie | 31 Oct 2022 | News | Technology

Have you embarked on a tech project that isn’t quite going to plan? Having spent considerable funds and hours of work on implementing a system, do the benefits of delivering it still feel miles away? Does it feel like all of your time and effort may be fruitless? Don’t give up yet!

Whether you’re battling significant disruption, overspending, delays, discontent, or people are questioning your decisions, we’re here to help you find the path to success. All is not lost…

Have confidence in your decisions

If you’ve embarked on implementing a new technology, you’ll have carefully chosen the perfect product for the job. Don’t throw away that hard work; remember all the positives about the tech and have confidence that it can achieve all that was promised.

You’ve already come a long way with this project and we’re sure you set out with great intentions and the right idea. You need to remember why you are delivering the system, and the potential it has to grow your company to then recapture that energy for yourself and your team. If you don’t feel that the ‘why’ is clear enough, now’s the time to further define it.

Clearly define your goals

In a recent survey, 72% of respondents ranked ‘poorly defined goals’ as one of their top three reasons for the failure of technology implementation projects. If people are struggling to share your vision, you can’t expect them to enthusiastically change their habits and adopt new tech.

Carefully think about the project: what are you doing and why? Will this new system streamline processes, if so which ones? Will it improve the working lives of all who use it, if not, why? If not everyone why? Whatever the desired outcome, it’s important to clearly define goals, and map the change, for yourself and the rest of the team. You’ll become one unit working towards one goal, thus making the implementation process that much smoother.

Map the change

Moving on from defining your goals is planning the route to get there. This is essential for both you and everyone else in your business. The lack of a clear roadmap and what good progress looks like can lead you significantly off course without realising it.

A ‘map’ detailing where you’re going, the business outcomes you are trying to achieve, and therefore the changes that need to take place, makes things clear for everyone and ensures you’re all heading in the same direction. This also facilitates progress and motivation within your team.

Turn demotivation into remotivation

It’s understandable if you’re feeling a bit demoralised but you’re already doing better than you think. If you’re reading this, you’re clearly still driven to make your project a success and it’s not too late.

If you are feeling that way, it’s likely that your team are also finding it tough, so it’s time to refocus and create the right mindset. Internal resistance to change was ranked as the third biggest reason for technology implementation failure. You need to recognise this and tackle it head on.

It’s easier said than done though, so if you’re still feeling in over your head, it’s time to call in the experts…
